Racial Profiling Post 9/11 Rusat Ramgopal CRJBS 101 John Jay College Professor Gary Wright August 4, 2016 Racial Profiling Post 9/11 On September 11, 2001, nineteen hijackers associated with the terrorist group Al-Qaeda attacked the United States. They flew two planes into the World Trade Center and also attacked the Pentagon resulting in the deaths of 2,996 people. Fifteen of the nineteen hijackers were Saudi Arabian, two were from the United Arab Emirates, one was from Lebanon, and one was from Egypt. Following the 9/11, racial profiling in the United States resulted in people of Arab or South Asian origin being targeted in the United States as they were perceived to look similar to the Islamic terrorists of groups such as Al-Qaeda. The racial profiling of Americans of Arab or South Asian descent has led to their rights, guaranteed to them by the U.S. law and Constitution have been violated, which is a grave injustice.. The Hawthorne Experiments and Human Behavior Elton Mayos studies grew out of preliminary experiments at the Hawthorne plant from 1924 to 1927 on the effect of light on productivity. Those experiments showed no clear connection between productivity and the amount of illumination but researchers began to wonder what kind of changes would influence output. Variables Affecting Productivity Specifically, Elton Mayo wanted to find out what effect fatigue and monotony had on job productivity and how to control them through such variables as rest breaks, work hours, temperature and humidity. The worker is a person whose attitudes and effectiveness are conditioned by social demands from both inside and outside the work plant. Informal group within the work plant exercise strong social controls over the work habits and attitudes of the individual worker. The need for recognition, security and sense of belonging is more important in determining workers morale and productivity than the physical conditions under which he works. The major finding of the study was that almost regardless of the experimental manipulation, worker production seemed to continually improve. One reasonable conclusion is that the workers were happy to receive attention from the researchers who expressed an interest in them. Originally, the study was expected to last one year, but since the findings were inexplicable when the researchers tried to relate the workers efficiency to manipulated physical conditions, the project was incrementally extended to five years. 'Where in the World' Classroom Icebreaker Technology and transportation in the modern world have given us the opportunity to learn so much more, often first hand, about the rest of the world. If you haven’t had the privilege of global traveling, you may have experienced the thrill of conversing with foreigners online or working side-by-side with them in your industry. The world becomes a smaller place the more we get to know each other. When you have a gathering of people from various countries, this icebreaker is a breeze, but it’s also fun when participants are all from the same place and know each other well. Everyone is capable of dreams that cross borders. To make this icebreaker kinetic, require that one of the three clues be a physical motion. For example, skiing, golfing, painting, fishing, etc. Basic information about the Where in the World Icebreaker: Ideal Size: Up to 30. Divide larger groups.Use For: Introductions in the classroom or at a meeting, especially when you have an international group of participants or an international topic to discuss.Time Needed: 30 minutes, depending on the size of the group. Instructions Give people a minute or two to think of three clues that describe, but don’t give away, either the country they are from (if different from the one you’re in) or their favorite foreign place they have visited or dream of visiting. When ready, each person gives their name and their three clues, and the rest of the group guesses where in the world they are describing. Give each person a minute or two to explain what they like best about their favorite place in the world. Start with yourself so they have an example. If you want students on their feet and moving, require that one clue be a physical motion like swimming, hiking, golfing, etc. This clue may include verbal help or not. You choose. For example: Hi, my name is Deb. One of my favorite places in the world is tropical, has a beautiful body of water you can climb, and is near a popular cruise port (I am physically imitating climbing). After guessing is finished: One of my favorite places in the world is Dunn’s River Falls near Ocho Rios, Jamaica. We stopped there on a Caribbean cruise and had the marvelous opportunity of climbing the falls. You start at sea level and can climb 600 feet gradually up the river, swimming in pools, standing under small falls, sliding down smooth rocks. It’s a beautiful and fantastic experience. The Body Project essays In the book The Body Project, Joan Jacobs Brumberg examines how the social changes of the last century have affected the ways in which teenage girls regard their bodies and themselves. By the use of various historical documents, including the many diaries of adolescent women, the author looks at the developing attitudes towards such issues as physical occurrences like that of menarche which we know as menstruation and skin conditions such as acne. Brumberg also focuses on the shift in emphasis from "good works" to "good looks", and the changing relationships between teenagers and parental importance. The author allows us as a modern day society to come and understand how these historical influences operate providing us with a structure of understanding the harmful attitudes that girls absorb in adolescence which result in an internalized sense of self doubt or insignificance which often leads into the corruption of personal advancement of female adolescence into adult life. To understand the meaning of the title Body Project, one must come to know and recognize the social concerns that females have undergone in American history. Since the beginning of the colonization of America, females, although considered secondary to males, have had to ensure that they know and understand what it means to be an individual looked upon as being graceful and in lieu of remaining beautiful. The author made clear that the title was chosen to show how girls came to define themselves progressively through their bodies, thus becoming the primary project of the female society. What human actions are considered moral? Three examples were given by Hume to illustrate the moral position on human action and these sentiments are the major drivers of moral application. These included incest, murder and ingratitude. He sought to emphasize the reason why incest is perceived to be wrong with humans, while the same action when replicated in animals is not wrong (White, 31). To illustrate his point, Hume argued that there are no ideas or fact that support why incest is wrong in humans but the same action in animals is perceived normal. Referring to incest, He noted that there is no difference between human beings and animal actions, but only that the human being can disprove this claim. He also used deliberate murder, whether it is right or wrong and whether there are ideas or facts that support the wrongness of an action. He said that mu rder is wrong and that is a fact, but people dismiss that fact and intentionally murder. Concerning ingratitude, he argued that it is a crime, which lacks observable facts or any set of relation to ideas, but a conflict and a conviction of the mind. It is the feeling of indifference or ill will after being ungrateful. 3. What actions are often considered to lead to moral or immorality? After dismissing morals as products of facts or ideas but mere sets of sentimentalism, it is therefore clear that Hume’s way suggests that human actions are majorly guided by sentiments in as far as morality is concerned. It further asserts that reasons cannot be applied to undertake a moral action because the two (morals and Reasoning) are completely unrelated (White, 31). Contributing to Hume’s concerns on morality and human, James stipulates that â€Å"if morality had naturally no influence on human passion and action.† Moreover, he claimed, â€Å"it would be in vain to take s uch pains to inculcate it and nothing would be more fruitless than that multitude of rules and precepts with which moralists abound† (White, 31). He notes that as a practical division, morality is supposed to play an integral role in directing the human passion and action. He reiterates that because of morality the human beings, they are governed by their duties, deterred from certain actions due to the feeling of injustice and compelled to undertake certain actions as matters of obligation. 4. What actions that influences morality Acknowledging that human actions are influenced by their morals, it is infallible to depict reason as the causal subject. These premises justify that human actions are seldom determined by reason but rather sentiments. Morals have a peculiar way of exciting or stimulating human action, which results from doing the action or stopping it. James then states that conclusions cannot be extracted from the rules of morality. In line with Hume’s argu ment, James also observes that most of the human action and the outcome of such actions are elements of fact or reasons. He used willful murder as an example to establish if there exists a fact in human action.
